Your thyroid creates and produces hormones that play a role in many different systems throughout your body. When your thyroid makes either too much or too little of these important hormones, it’s called a thyroid disease. There are several different types of thyroid disease, including hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are the two main types of thyroid disease. The thyroid gland can be affected by other diseases that impact its function in both conditions. Overproduction of thyroid hormones causes all types of hyperthyroidism.

Diagnosis and Treatment

If you have a thyroid disorder caused by over- or underproduction of thyroid hormones, you should attempt to correct the hormone levels. As a result of hyperthyroidism, slowdowns in thyroid hormone production are needed, while hypothyroidism requires hormone replacement. If you have hypothyroidism, you will need to take thyroid hormone replacement for the rest of your life. Once the thyroid slows down, no amount of surgery, drugs, or complementary medicine will help. In most cases, thyroid hormones are prescribed as synthetic forms, such as levothyroxine. People taking these drugs may experience nervousness or chest pain as side effects. Unpleasant effects can be reduced by altering the dosage.
