Alopecia

 Alopecia

Hair loss or alopecia refers to a loss of hair on one or more parts of the body. The scalp is mostly affected. Depending on the severity of hair loss, it may affect only a small area or the entire body. Males and females are both affected by alopecia.

Causes

  • Lupus
  • Thyroid disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Abnormality in the immune system that damages hair follicles
  • Vitiligo

Diagnosis and Treatment

It is occasionally necessary to biopsy the scalp to confirm the diagnosis. A bald area may also show a growth of short hairs that are presumably fractured hairs, thin and short hairs, and grey hairs growing in the area.

Treatment Includes

  • Steroid creams, lotions, and shampoos
  • Topical immunotherapy
  • Elimination of emotional stress
  • Corticosteroids
  • Oral systemic steroids
